LUCENA CITY, Quezon - The province of Quezon has emerged as a recipient of the prestigious 'Beyond Compliant Province' recognition in the 23rd Gawad Kalasag awards. This recognition highlights Quezon's exceptional efforts and commitment to disaster risk reduction and management. The province's proactive measures and innovative strategies have set a benchmark for other regions in ensuring the safety and resilience of its communities during times of calamities.

Quezon Governor Doktora Angeline "Helen" Tan personally accepted the award on December 11, 2023, at the Manila Hotel in Ermita, Manila, and said her administration will continue to deliver services that will maintain the safety of every citizen in the province of Quezon and further enhance their disaster preparedness.

She expressed gratitude to the Gawad Kalasag committee for acknowledging their hard work and vowed to collaborate with other provinces in sharing best practices and knowledge in disaster risk reduction. Governor Tan also emphasized the importance of community involvement and urged the residents of Quezon to actively participate in disaster drills and trainings to ensure a collective effort in building a resilient province.

The province's success in this area can be attributed to the government's strong collaboration with local communities and various stakeholders, which has resulted in effective early warning systems, evacuation plans, and resilient infrastructure through the Quezon Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (QPDRRMO), led by Dr. Melchor Avenilla Jr.

The province received a 2.50 rating, demonstrating the skills and effectiveness of the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils and Offices (LDRRMCOs) in disaster and calamity preparedness and response.

Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and Interior and Local Government Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. were among the government officials who commended the efforts of QPDRRMO and LDRRMCOs in Quezon province.

They praised the collaboration between different sectors and the proactive approach taken to ensure the safety and resilience of the community. This recognition highlights the importance of strong leadership and coordination in disaster risk reduction and management.
