Journalists battlecry, "Not yet Rizal, not yet."
Dr. Jose Rizal

In the Philippines, there are countless heroes who have left a significant mark on history. However, one name stands out among the rest: Jose Rizal. Known as the national hero of the Philippines, Rizal's contributions and sacrifices have shaped the nation's identity and continue to inspire generations.

His legacy as a writer, reformist, and martyr has made him an iconic figure in Philippine history. Some of his words have become timeless quotes that resonate with people to this day. Rizal's belief in the power of education and his advocacy for social justice have left a lasting impact on the Filipino people.

A wave of Filipino nationalism and awakening was sparked by his works, which included the books Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, which revealed the wrongs and corruption of Spanish colonial power.

Rizal's courage to speak out against oppression and his willingness to sacrifice his own life for the sake of his country serve as a reminder that change is possible even in the face of adversity.

There is one quote about this that perfectly captures Rizal's courage to fight for justice: "“The tyranny of some is possible only through the cowardice of others.” - Letter to the Young Women of Malolos, 1889.

This quote reflects Rizal's belief that people have the power to resist and overcome oppression, but it also highlights the importance of collective action and solidarity in fighting against injustice.

Rizal's words continue to inspire generations of Filipinos to stand up for their rights and work towards a better future for their country.

Although a lot of today's youth are aware of and actively engaged in social issues, a lot of people are still cowardly, standing by and allowing injustices to happen because they are afraid of the consequences or lack the courage to speak out.

One of these is a journalist who chooses to remain silent about corruption within their government for fear of retaliation or losing their job.

This journalist's silence may perpetuate the cycle of injustice and hinder progress towards a more just society.

Because everyone's situation is unique, there is no universally correct way to decide whether to speak up or be silent.

Many Filipino journalists, like Rizal, have chosen to speak out against corruption and injustice, but in the end, they were killed for their bravery. This highlights the immense risks that journalists face when they choose to expose corruption and advocate for justice.

Despite these dangers, their actions inspire others to follow in their footsteps and work towards a more transparent and equitable society. It's sad that injustice continues to prevail in many parts of the world, including the Philippines.

The courage and sacrifice of these journalists serve as a reminder that change is possible and that their voices will not be silenced.

But the question is, should someone have to give their life to the nation in order to uncover the truth and fight against corruption?

It is a sobering reality that journalists often find themselves in the line of fire, risking everything for the betterment of society.

However, it is crucial for societies to prioritize the protection of journalists and ensure their safety so that their invaluable contributions can be made without such devastating sacrifices.

Journalists are modern heroes, but they often go unrecognized and underappreciated.

Think about Jose Rizal, alive today, using his pen to expose corruption and advocate for justice. He would be celebrated as a courageous voice for the people, reminding us of the importance of the free press and the power of truth in shaping a nation's destiny.

Not yet, Rizal, but there are countless journalists around the world who continue to risk their lives and face threats in order to bring important stories to light.

Their dedication and bravery should not be taken for granted.
