LUCENA CITY, Quezon - Rep. Keith Micah Tan, also known as "Atorni Mike" of Quezon Province's 4th District, recognizes the importance of inclusivity and accessibility in our democratic process, has proposed a groundbreaking law that would allow persons with disabilities (PWDs) to vote early.
In a recent press release, Tan underscored the importance of this measure in guaranteeing equal participation and representation for people with disabilities in elections. Allowing them to vote early gives PWDs more flexibility and convenience, allowing them to overcome any physical or logistical challenges they may encounter on election day.
House Bill No. 2544 outlines specific provisions that would make early voting accessible to PWDs. These provisions include designated accessible polling stations with appropriate accommodations and assistance for those who require it.
When implemented, it is stated to allow qualified persons with disabilities to vote seven days before the election date in certain locations and precincts. PWDs will be able to register nationwide to vote early. If a PWD is not registered, he can vote on election day.
In order for the implementation to be effective, the congressman also requests that the COMELEC build the records, database, and registration system. It should also be assured that polling stations are accessible and well equipped for the various types and circumstances of PWDs.
People with disabilities (PWDs) face unique challenges during elections, such as mobility concerns and long queues at the polls, which this initiative hopes to address.
The proposal aims to promote equal participation and representation for all people, regardless of physical disability, by allowing them to vote ahead of time.
