LUCENA CITY, Quezon - Tanggol Kalikasan's unwavering advocacy for the West Philippine Sea (WPS) continues, highlighting its critical role in safeguarding food security for countless Filipinos. This leading environmental organization consistently pushes for the protection and responsible management of marine resources in this vital region, recognizing their significant impact on the nation's food supply chain.

In a recent exclusive interview at the Kapihan sa PIA Quezon via Zoom, headed by Lito Giron, Head of PIA Quezon, Tanggol Kalikasan, Senior Legal Adviser, Atty. Asis Perez shed light on the crucial role of the WPS in ensuring food security for countless Filipinos. Atty. Perez emphasized that this maritime territory serves as a vital fishing ground, providing sustenance and livelihood to numerous coastal communities across the country.

According to Atty. Perez, the West Philippine Sea is home to abundant marine resources, including various fish species and other seafood delicacies that are integral to Filipino cuisine. The rich biodiversity found in these waters not only supports local fishing industries but also contributes significantly to the overall food supply chain in the Philippines.

He further explained that any threats or encroachments on the WPS could have severe implications for the nation's food security. Disputes over territorial claims and illegal activities such as overfishing or destruction of coral reefs can directly impact the availability of fresh seafood, leading to potential shortages and price hikes in local markets.

Though he acknowledges there may be risk, he believes that the government is taking the necessary measures to protect biodiversity and ensure sustainable fishing practices in the West Philippine Sea. Additionally, international collaborations and agreements are being pursued to address these issues and maintain the region's food security.

He is confident that in the near future, the WPS battle will be resolved through diplomatic negotiations and adherence to international laws. The involvement of various stakeholders, including neighboring countries and international organizations, will play a crucial role in finding a peaceful and mutually beneficial solution. Ultimately, the goal is to establish a framework that promotes cooperation, environmental conservation, and the fair distribution of marine resources in the WPS.

During the Kapihan sa PIA Quezon, Perez also urged the media to play an active role in raising awareness about the threats to the WPS. He emphasized the need for accurate and timely reporting on issues related to territorial disputes and illegal activities, as well as the importance of highlighting the potential consequences for food security.

As discussions surrounding the WPS continue, it is evident that safeguarding its resources is not just a matter of territorial integrity but also an essential component in securing an adequate food supply for millions of Filipinos. The insights shared by Atty. Perez serves as a reminder of the urgent need to protect this vital maritime territory for both environmental sustainability and national food security purposes.

He said the WPS is every Filipino's responsibility and that it is crucial for the government and its citizens to work together to preserve its resources. Actively participating in sustainable fishing practices and advocating for stricter regulations, Filipinos can contribute to the long-term preservation of the WPS and ensure a stable food supply for future generations.
