TAYABAS CITY, Quezon - Seven Tayabas City athletes who bagged medals in the Batang Pinoy and Philippine National Games have received cash incentives in recognition of their hard work, dedication, and achievements in the Philippine Sports Commission events.
In a Facebook post, the Tayabas City information office said the athletes were Angelica Mae Altamarino, who won a gold medal in the cycling women's criterium race open category in the Philippine National Games; Rainy Jane Abres, who won a silver medal in boxing girls flyweight in Batang Pinoy; and Alessandra Atayde, Aldrix Rein Patawaran, Leo Mhar Lobrido, Jervien Cueto, and Junel Miranda for bronze.
Gold medal winners received PHP20,000 each; silver medalists got PHP15,000; and bronze medalists were given PHP10,000 each at the ceremony today, January 22, 2024, held at the Atrium of the New Tayabas City Hall.
This gesture serves as a form of appreciation for their representation of Tayabas in national competitions, bringing pride and honor to their hometown.
"We are very proud of our young athletes, who have brought honor to our city. They have shown that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible" Tayabas City Mayor Lovely Reynoso-Pontioso said.
The cash incentives are also part of the city government's sports development program. The program aims to provide financial support to athletes so that they can focus on their training and competition.
"We want to make sure that our athletes have the resources they need to succeed. We believe that sports can be a tool for empowerment and development, and we are committed to supporting our athletes in their journey," she added.
The Batang Pinoy and Philippine National Games are the country's premier sporting events for young athletes. The Batang Pinoy is for athletes aged 12 to 15, while the Philippine National Games are for athletes aged 16 to 19.
These athletic competitions, which are among the Philippine Sports Commission's top projects, are held at Philsports Oval in Pasig, while the BP swimming meet is held at the Teofilo Yldefonso Aquatic Center within the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, and the PNG swimfest is held at the Philsports pool.
Other sports are archery, athletics, badminton, 3x3 basketball, boxing, chess, cycling, dancesport, football, gymnastics, judo, karate, kickboxing, lawn tennis, muay thai, pencak silat, sepak takraw, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, beach volleyball, wrestling, weightlifting, and wushu.
