TIAONG, Quezon - Residents in this town are provided with free pneumonia and flu shots as part of a healthcare initiative. This program aims to ensure the well-being and health of Tiaong residents by preventing the spread of these common illnesses.
On Friday, January 12, 2024, at Tiaong Town Plaza, covering the barangays of Poblacion 1-4 and Quipot, a free vaccination drive for pneumonia and flu was held. The event was organized by the local government led by Tiaong Mayor Arjay Mea and facilitated by the Municipal Health Office led by Dr. Elizalde Bercero, Jr.
The free vaccination seeks to reach as many residents as possible, particularly senior citizens and those who are comorbid with underlying health conditions. The initiative also provided education and information on the importance of vaccination and proper hygiene practices to prevent the spread of illnesses.
“It’s for prevention. We want to ensure the health and well-being of our community members, especially those who are more vulnerable to respiratory illnesses," said Mayor Mea.
Over 238 residents received the pneumonia and flu vaccines during the drive. The local government ensured that all necessary safety protocols were followed, including social distancing and proper disinfection of the vaccination area.
The Sangguniang Bayan of Tiaong, Engr. Rico De Leon, Quezon DOH Representative, also attended the program, along with Andrea San Pdero of the Provincial Department of Health (DOH) NIP Coordinator.
It was also held in other barangay health stations throughout the municipality to guarantee accessibility for all its residents.
According to the Tiaong local government, the initiative will continue in the next few weeks with the goal of reaching as many residents as possible. People interested in getting the vaccine can learn more about the flu vaccine schedule in their barangay by visiting the Municipal Health Office in Tiaong, Quezon.
Senior citizens can also receive the recommended doses of pneumonia and influenza vaccines in public health care facilities, according to the DOH's implementing guidelines for senior immunization.
In addition to contact with surfaces, materials, or clothing contaminated with an infected person's discharges, the flu virus can spread through droplets produced by an infected person coughing, talking, or sneezing, as well as through these methods.
Its signs and symptoms include a temperature of at least 38 degrees Celsius, headache, runny nose, sore throat, cough, or other respiratory manifestations, and the patient may or may not be experiencing muscular or joint discomfort.
Vaccination against influenza is available to residents of government-run and Department of Social Welfare and Development-accredited residential care facilities, health care workers, pregnant women, adults with comorbidities, frontline personnel such as military personnel, and other healthy adults.
