MULANAY, Quezon – A newborn baby boy was discovered abandoned at the Saint Peter the Apostle Parish Church on the evening of Tuesday, February 20, 2024.
The infant received prompt care thanks to the quick actions of churchgoer Adelina Gonzales, who discovered him wrapped in a cloth beneath a statue while praying at approximately 7:35 PM. She immediately alerted the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO).
The baby was transported to the Mulanay Rural Health Unit for a full checkup and essential care. Mulanay Mayor Aristotle Aguirre expressed concern, saying, "Hopefully, the baby received necessary care. His umbilical cord is still fresh, and he needs all the help he can get."
MSWDO head Gil Dimaano highlighted the potential legal consequences for the person responsible, underscoring that child abandonment and neglect are serious offenses.
Police and the MSWDO are actively investigating to identify the baby's mother, including reviewing CCTV footage. Dimaano urged anyone with information to come forward.
The community has responded with an outpouring of support, including offers to adopt and well wishes for the baby's welfare. The baby, now named "Baby Mulanay," is in good health and under close medical supervision. The local government is exploring options for his long-term care.
Recent developments include a study of CCTV footage from February 20 that shows a lady wearing a hood and face mask standing at the altar before immediately leaving the scene. The investigation continues as authorities work diligently to identify and locate the baby's mother. The community remains hopeful for a positive resolution to this heart-wrenching situation.
