SARIAYA, Quezon - The local government of Sariaya has taken a proactive approach to improving nutrition emergency preparedness by developing a comprehensive module that addresses various scenarios and challenges.

Following a series of consultations with nutrition experts and community stakeholders, the module includes guidelines for emergency response, food distribution, and monitoring of nutritional status to ensure a coordinated and effective response during crises.

Under the leadership of Mayor Marcelo Gayeta, the Municipal Nutrition Action Office (MNAO) of Sariaya, led by Nutrition Action Officer Reymundo Razon, launched on February 28, 2024, a collaborative Nutrition Emergency Preparedness and Response initiative at the Belhotel Blulane Sta Cruz Manila.

This effort is a partnership between the MNAO, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), the Municipal Health Office, the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office, the Office of the Municipal Planning and Development Coordinator, and Nutriskwela Community Radio.

The initiative aims to equip the 43 barangays of Sariaya with knowledge and strategies to address nutritional concerns before, during, and after disaster situations. The MDRRMO provided funding for this important project.

A key component of the initiative is the "Crafting of Modules" seminar, led by the Quezon Provincial Health Office - Provincial Nutrition Action Office (PHO-PNAO). During the seminar, Tracy Joyce Lindo (RND, Nutrition Dietician II, PHO-PNAO) emphasized the importance of equipping barangay-level workers with accurate knowledge and clear terminology to effectively communicate nutrition information in emergencies.

In addition, Chelsea Marie Angeli Arias (RND, Nutrition Officer I, PHO-PNAO) commended Sariaya's multisectoral approach to addressing nutritional challenges. Participants who previously attended the Joint Regional Technical Session (RTS) on Capacity Building of the Regional Project Management Team on Nutrition Emergencies (NIE) also completed a pre-test as part of the seminar.

MDRRMO Officer Sinforoso "DonDon" Martinez expressed his gratitude for the collaborative effort and emphasized the importance of working together to develop comprehensive emergency nutrition modules for each barangay.

The initiative will continue from February 28 to March 1, 2024, with the goal of successful implementation throughout Sariaya.
