UPLB's Paglaum |
LOS BAÑOS, Laguna –Students at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) brought back their annual Paglaum event on February 15, 2024, at the February Fair to shed light on the injustices faced by the Philippines' working class and rural communities. "Paglaum," meaning "hope" in Visayan, reflects the event's commitment to amplifying the voices of the marginalized in the ongoing fight for justice.
This year's theme, "Tanghalan ng Pakikidigma (Theater of War)", used cultural performances to illuminate the economic and social challenges confronting workers, farmers, and indigenous groups. The event was organized by Anakbayan UPLB, the League of Filipino Students UPLB, Panday Sining UPLB, and NNARA Youth UPLB.
Paglaum's theme also highlighted economic injustice and systemic oppression. Cultural performances, passionate speeches, and visual art exposed the hardships faced by those under the current administration.
"Paglaum serves as a powerful reminder that true progress requires constant vigilance and collective action," said Jesus Monasterial, Finance and Alliance Committee Head of Paglaum 2024. "This event honors UPLB's tradition of student activism and amplifies the voices of those fighting for a just society."
Monasterial emphasized the urgent need to confront issues like low wages, rising costs of living, the displacement of jeepney drivers, and the persistence of landlessness that leave workers and peasants in cycles of poverty.
He stressed that Paglaum builds upon UPLB's long history of student activism, amplifying the struggles of marginalized communities. This tradition reflects the university's commitment to social engagement and critical thinking.
Through powerful artistic expression, Paglaum took these struggles to life. Musical acts like Takuyan, Tubaw, and Kolaris sparked a spirit of resistance and hope. Speakers, artists, and poets will also share their profound insights, inspiring attendees to turn awareness into sustained action.
The event was more than raising awareness; it was a call for students and community members to become active allies. Organizers encouraged attendees to participate in ongoing campaigns, engage directly with affected communities, and educate themselves on the interconnectedness of these struggles, both here in the Philippines and around the globe.
"Paglaum reminds us that the fight for justice is continuous," emphasized Monasterial. "The young activists today are carrying on a legacy of those who came before us. Their passion and energy are paving the way for a better future."
He also said young activists at Paglaum represent the next generation of advocates for social change and not enemies of the country, emphasizing that their passion and dedication should be seen as an asset rather than a threat.
The struggles highlighted at Paglaum are not unique to the Philippines. Workers, farmers, and marginalized communities worldwide face similar injustices fueled by global economic systems and power imbalances. Paglaum contributes to the international dialogue seeking transformative change.
