GUMACA, Quezon – In response to the ongoing El Niño-induced drought, the Gumaca Local Government Unit (LGU) has launched the "Ayudang Tubig" program on April 24, 2024. Mayor Webster Letargo and Vice Mayor Rico Bañal initiated the program to provide immediate relief to residents facing water shortages.
Under the program, water is being trucked in from nearby municipalities and distributed to affected areas, starting with Barangay Tabing Dagat. The LGU is also working to raise awareness about water conservation techniques to help residents cope with the dry spell.
“Our top priority is ensuring that Gumaca residents have access to clean, safe water during this difficult time,” said Mayor Letargo. "The 'Ayudang Tubig' program is a crucial step in mitigating the effects of El Niño."
The Engineering Office is overseeing the distribution efforts. Residents are urged to conserve water and fully cooperate with the program.
El Niño is a weather pattern that disrupts normal conditions, often causing droughts in some parts of the world. The Philippines is currently experiencing El Niño conditions.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) forecasts 10 to 13 tropical cyclones to enter the country between May and October 2024.
