TAGKAWAYAN, Quezon - The Barangay Tourism Council officers in Tagkawayan recently bolstered their commitment to a safe and welcoming tourism experience by undergoing a comprehensive gender sensitivity and safe spaces training program.
This initiative was led collaboratively by the Municipal Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office, Anna Louella Villanueva, and the Municipal Gender and Development Focal Point System, Rhea Rodriguez, on April 25–26, 2024.
The intensive training addressed key areas, including understanding gender-based violence facilitated by Sharmaine Marie Chan, SOGIESC awareness led by Jay Alpuerto, gender-fair language, and Safe Spaces Act insights by Sedfrey Postades and Shannen Tierra.
Tagkawayan Councilor Pocholo "Choy" Eleazar led a workshop on the role of technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in fostering gender sensitivity, where participants learned about innovative ways to promote gender equality and prevent discrimination in the digital age.
He said this initiative aligns with the municipality's commitment to promoting equality and respect for all individuals, contributing to a more inclusive and diverse community. "This training is a testament to Tagkawayan's dedication to an inclusive tourism sector where everyone feels safe and respected," said Councilor Eleazar. "Empowering our Barangay Tourism Councils with these skills ensures a more welcoming experience for all visitors."
It emphasized practical strategies to combat discrimination and harassment, promoting a tourism environment where all tourists feel valued, regardless of gender identity or expression. Tagkawayan aims to be a leading destination known for its inclusivity and diversity.
Postadas reaffirmed the importance of gender sensitivity training in tourism. "It's essential for ensuring all individuals feel safe and respected. This training helps staff better serve diverse travelers, resulting in a more positive overall experience."
Gender sensitivity training is essential in the tourism industry to ensure that all individuals feel safe and respected while visiting different destinations, according to Postadas.
