LUCENA CITY, Quezon – Aspiring science journalists from Cotta National High School in Lucena City, Quezon province recently participated in a two-day Science Journo Ako journalism training workshop hosted by the Department of Science and Technology - Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII).
The first day of the workshop, held on May 11, at Queen Margarette Hotel in Lucena City, provided students with valuable insights and practical skills to enhance their science communication abilities. The sessions featured a session on writing science news and feature articles led by Ruby Shaira Panela, a professional writer and media relations officer from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI).
Participants then delved into the world of visual storytelling as Aileen Camille Dimatatac, a professional freelance photojournalist, shared tips on capturing compelling photos and crafting effective captions. The day concluded with a session on writing engaging social media content, led by Allan Mauro Marfal, the DOST-STII social media manager.
On the second day, student-participants had the opportunity to experience the life of a science journalist for a day by visiting Granja Panciteria, one of the local businesses that benefited from the DOST's Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP).
"Science journalism plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between the scientific community and the public. By equipping young minds with the skills to effectively communicate scientific advancements, we empower them to become advocates for evidence-based decision-making and contribute to a more informed society," said DOST-STII Director Richard P. Burgos.
The Science Journo Ako workshop series, launched in 2015, is one of DOST-STII's flagship programs aimed at developing a pool of science communicators and journalists in the country. The program aims to empower young science enthusiasts with the tools and knowledge to effectively communicate scientific concepts to the public.
The Department of Science and Technology - Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII) is committed to promoting science communication and enhancing public understanding of science and technology. Through various programs and initiatives, DOST-STII strives to bridge the gap between scientists and the public, fostering a scientifically literate society.
