LUCBAN, Quezon - The vibrant Pahiyas Festival in Lucban, Quezon Province, served as a platform for Senator Imee Marcos to honor the resilience and dedication of Quezon's farmers. "Today, we celebrate the farmers of Quezon, especially those in Lucban," said Senator Marcos, who arrived at the festival's Street Dancing Competition on May 15, 2024, after overcoming a helicopter malfunction.
She emphasized the farmers' crucial role in the country's food supply, stating, "Every grain of rice represents the sweat and heart of our farmers. Their toil feeds our families and society." She acknowledged the challenges they face, particularly with rising costs, and expressed her commitment to ensuring they receive the recognition and support they deserve.
Marcos also highlighted the importance of supporting farmers through education and fair compensation, stressing that this is essential for achieving food security for everyone. She emphasized that appreciating and empowering farmers through education is key to improving their livelihoods and contributing to a more sustainable future.
In a significant announcement, Marcos also called on Local Government Units (LGUs) throughout Quezon Province to review and correct their lists of residents belonging to the marginalized sector, including indigent families and senior citizens. This action is crucial, as those in these sectors are set to receive significantly increased monthly aid from the government.
The monthly aid, previously 500 pesos, will now be 1,000 pesos for the year 2024. Senator Marcos highlighted that this increase was a promise made long ago by the opposition, but not delivered until now. She expressed her satisfaction that the government, under the current administration, is fulfilling this promise.
In addition to the increased aid, Senator Marcos also addressed the Centenarian Act, which grants 100,000 pesos to individuals reaching the age of 100. While not everyone qualifies for this full amount, the senator clarified that the program has been expanded. The president's sister explained that individuals aged 80, 90, and 95 will also receive smaller, yet still meaningful, amounts as recognition for their contributions to family and society.
