LUCENA CITY, Batangas – The Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) has recommended four areas in Quezon and Laguna for an upgrade from Red (Infected) Zone to Pink (Buffer) Zone in the ongoing fight against African Swine Fever (ASF).

The municipalities of Gumaca, Lucena City, and Tayabas City in Quezon, along with Pagsanjan in Laguna, have reportedly met the necessary requirements for this progression as outlined in Department of Agriculture Administrative Order No. 30, Series of 2021. This order establishes the National Zoning and Movement Plan for ASF, which guides the classification and management of areas based on their ASF status.



Dr. Linda M. Lucela, Chief of BAI's Regulatory Division, confirmed the endorsement in a letter to Regional Executive Director Fidel L. Libao of the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office IV-A. The official upgrade, however, is pending the release of an updated National Zoning Status Map.

This development marks a significant step in controlling ASF in these areas, potentially paving the way for the resumption of hog raising and related economic activities. A Pink (Buffer) Zone classification indicates that while the area is still considered at risk, active surveillance and enhanced biosecurity measures are in place to prevent the further spread of the disease.

The successful transition of these areas to Pink Zones would serve as a model for other ASF-affected regions, showcasing the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between government agencies, local communities, and the hog industry. It would also provide a much-needed boost to the agricultural sector, particularly for hog farmers who have been grappling with the devastating impacts of ASF for years.

The BAI remains committed to collaborating with local government units and stakeholders in implementing comprehensive ASF prevention and control measures across the country. The agency continues to emphasize the importance of strict biosecurity protocols, early detection and reporting of suspected cases, and responsible animal movement to effectively manage and eventually eradicate ASF in the Philippines.
