LUCENA CITY, Quezon - A devastating fire ripped through Barangay 9 on June 8th, destroying 24 households and leaving 25 families, totaling 90 individuals, homeless. The blaze, which engulfed a land area of 600 square meters and caused an estimated Php 900,000 in damages, fortunately resulted in no casualties.
The provincial government, led by Quezon Governor Angeline "Doktora Helen" Tan and Vice Governor Anacleto "Third" Alcala, along with Lucena City Mayor Mark Alcala, have swiftly responded with comprehensive aid.
"We are deeply saddened by this tragedy, but we want to assure the affected families that they are not alone," Gov. Tan said during said during her visit to the fire site, June 11, 2023. "The provincial government is committed to providing immediate relief and long-term support to help them rebuild their lives."
Vice Gov. Alcala added, "We are grateful for the overwhelming support from the community. The donations of food, clothing, and other essential items have been a tremendous help to the fire victims."
The Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) was immediately mobilized to provide essential relief, including food, water, and temporary shelter. During the provincial government's flag-raising ceremony, the governor appealed for further donations, and the response has been overwhelming, with both government employees and the public generously donating to help the fire victims.
The governor's eldest son, Doctor Kim Tan, was also among the first to extend aid to the victims, reflecting the family's commitment to public service. He stated, "Our family has always been dedicated to serving the people of Quezon, and we will continue to do everything we can to help those in need."
Gov. Tan assured the fire victims of the provincial government's unwavering support throughout their recovery. "We will not abandon you in this difficult time," she said. "We will work together to rebuild your homes and your lives."
A total of five fire trucks were mobilized to contain the blaze, under the leadership of Ground Commander FINSP Winsor C Oñate. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but FO1 Haydee B Manalo, who provided this report, assures that the community remains united in supporting the affected families and ensuring their well-being in the aftermath of this tragic incident.
