LUCENA CITY, Quezon - Quezon 3rd District Board Member John Joseph Aquivido stressed the vital role of child health in nation-building during a recent meeting of the Quezon Provincial Council, "The health and well-being of our young ones are fundamental to building a strong nation and a healthy society," said Aquivido, who chairs the council's health committee.
Aquivido championed the adoption of the Mandatory Infants and Children Health Immunization Act of 2011 as a provincial ordinance. This initiative ensures free vaccines for children under five, protecting them from preventable diseases like tuberculosis, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, and influenza type B (HIB).
His push highlights the importance of immunization programs. Vaccines are a safe and effective way to prevent infectious diseases. Widespread childhood immunization can achieve herd immunity, safeguarding not only vaccinated individuals but also those unable to receive vaccinations due to medical reasons.
This creates a safer environment for everyone in the community, reducing the risk of outbreaks and saving lives. Additionally, robust immunization programs can significantly reduce healthcare costs associated with treating preventable diseases.
While the National Immunization Program exists, enacting this ordinance on a provincial level strengthens the program's reach in Quezon. It allows for targeted efforts to address any specific immunization gaps or challenges within the province.
Additionally, local oversight can ensure efficient vaccine distribution and administration, maximizing the program's impact. This provincial ordinance serves as a vital tool to ensure all children in Quezon have access to these life-saving vaccines.
