CANDELARIA, Quezon – The Local Government of Candelaria has been awarded over ₱4.9 million in performance-based grants (PBG) under the Philippine Multi-sectoral Nutrition Project (PMNP). This World Bank-funded initiative aims to enhance health services and address malnutrition across the country.
Out of 24 municipalities in Quezon Province that received the grant, Candelaria was awarded the largest amount due to its effective local nutrition action plan, which was submitted to and approved by the Department of Health (DOH). The towns of Gumaca and Calauag also received significant grants.
The PBG amount awarded to each municipality is determined by factors such as the size of the municipality and the prevalence rates of stunting and malnutrition. In total, the first tranche of PBG grants distributed to the 24 municipalities in Quezon Province reached approximately ₱60 million.
Launched on August 4, 2023, the PMNP is a four-year project, and further tranches of PBG grants are anticipated in the future. The project aims to address the persistent issue of malnutrition in the Philippines, particularly among children. By providing funding and technical assistance to local governments, the PMNP seeks to improve the delivery of nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive interventions.
Mayor of Candelaria, Mayor George "Ogie" Suayan, expressed his gratitude for the grant and affirmed the municipality's commitment to utilizing the funds effectively. "We are deeply honored and grateful to be recognized for our efforts in combating malnutrition. This grant will be instrumental in expanding our nutrition programs, ensuring that every child in Candelaria has access to the nourishment they need to thrive and reach their full potential," he said.
The mayor also emphasized the importance of collaboration in addressing malnutrition. "This is a collective effort. We will continue to work hand-in-hand with our partners in the barangays, schools, and health centers to ensure that our nutrition programs reach every child and family in need."
The PMNP represents a significant investment in the future of the Philippines. By addressing malnutrition, the project is not only improving the health of individuals but also contributing to the country's overall development. As the project progresses, its impact is expected to be felt in communities across the nation.
