MAUBAN, Quezon – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Friday, July 26, 2024 underscored the urgent need for a comprehensive national response to climate change as he led assessment and relief efforts in typhoon-hit Mauban, Quezon. The President's visit followed the destructive path of Super Typhoon Carina, which exacerbated by the southwest monsoon, brought unprecedented flooding to Metro Manila and neighboring provinces.

“That’s climate change. That’s why we keep talking about it. People have to be conscious about it especially us who are trying to find ways to mitigate the problem,” Pres. Marcos Jr. said during a situation briefing in Mauban, Quezon. He emphasized the government’s commitment to investing in disaster preparedness, climate adaptation, and mitigation strategies.

The President conducted a thorough inspection of the severely damaged Mauban Sea Wall and Port, highlighting the critical infrastructure necessary to protect coastal communities. His meeting with local officials focused on immediate relief, damage assessment, and the development of a long-term recovery and rehabilitation plan.

The typhoon’s devastation was widespread, with 986 families or 4,324 individuals displaced from their homes. The government's rapid response provided essential aid, including food, water, shelter, and medical assistance to affected residents.

Marcos commended the efforts of national and local government agencies in addressing the crisis. He emphasized the importance of inter-agency cooperation and coordination for efficient disaster response.

“At the very least, we can say that the provision of relief, shelter and healthcare are ok. We’ve been able to provide that,” Pres. Marcos Jr. told LGUs and Cabinet members present during the briefing.

Pres. Marcos Jr. also recognized the efforts of the national and local governments as they were able to reach isolated areas to deliver help to typhoon victims.

The government is continuing to provide support to communities affected by Typhoon Carina and the enhanced southwest monsoon. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), a standby fund and stockpile worth PhP3.36 billion is available, while a total of PhP54.41 million in aid has already been distributed.

In Mauban, the Local Government Unit (LGU) reported extensive damage caused by Tropical Storm Aghon and Super Typhoon Carina, including housing, infrastructure, and agricultural losses. The LGU is proposing projects like a baywalk, slope protection, and improved drainage to mitigate future flooding.

Pres. Marcos Jr. is evaluating the assistance provided to the 40 affected barangays in Mauban. Meanwhile, Quezon province has reported the number of barangays and families affected by the typhoon, along with the extent of agricultural and infrastructure damage. The provincial government is continuously distributing aid to affected families.
