GENERAL LUNA, QUEZON - The town of General Luna has recently taken a significant step towards revitalizing the coconut industry and empowering local farmers with the inauguration of Quezon Province's first-ever hybrid dwarf coconut seed farm.
This landmark initiative, born from a collaboration between the local government, the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), and the family of Darrie Diego Ramos, aims to provide a sustainable and profitable alternative for copra farmers who have long been grappling with low market prices.
The farm is projected to yield hybrid dwarf coconut seedlings within three years. These seedlings will then be distributed to farmers across the Bondoc Peninsula, offering a promising solution to the challenges faced by the traditional copra industry.
General Luna Mayor Matt Erwin Florido, speaking at the launch event, underscored the significance of the project, stating, "We remain steadfast in our commitment to uplift those in the coconut sector and ensure their economic prosperity. The PCA and Darrie Diego Ramos family's initiative represents a crucial step towards achieving this goal."
"Through this collaboration, we have established the first and largest coconut seed farm in Quezon Province, right here in our beloved town. This will not only boost the local economy but also improve the livelihoods of our farmers, paving the way for a more sustainable future." he added.
The launch ceremony also witnessed the active participation of General Luna's youth in planting hybrid dwarf coconut trees, aligning with the national government's ambitious 100 Million Coconut Trees Program. The event was graced by the presence of PCA Regional Manager Jun Concebido and other PCA Quezon staff, along with local government officials and youth councils.
Florido expressed his gratitude to all stakeholders, emphasizing the collective effort required to bring about positive change in the lives of coconut farmers. The General Luna Coconut Seed Farm stands as a testament to the town's commitment to sustainable agriculture and economic development, paving the way for a brighter future for the coconut industry in Quezon Province.
