TAGKAWAYAN, Quezon - The town of Tagkawayan made history on August 6, 2024 as the first in Quezon province to launch the Paleng-QR Ph program. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from local business owners, transport groups, and town officials, signaling a united effort towards embracing a cashless society.
Paleng-QR Ph, a joint initiative of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), seeks to foster a digital payment ecosystem, primarily in public markets and the transportation sector. This move aims to enhance transaction convenience, efficiency, and financial inclusion for all residents.
Tagkawayan Mayor Carlo Eleazar, a staunch advocate of the program, emphasized the importance of adapting to the digital age, stating, “The world is moving towards digitization. We need to embrace this change. Both our businesses and consumers will reap the benefits once we get used to it.”
The launch was graced by BSP South Luzon Regional Director Atty. Tomas J. Cariño Jr., who also led the PIso Caravan. This initiative allowed residents to exchange their old and unfit currency for new ones, further promoting the Clean Note and Coin Policy and Coin Recirculation Program.
Representatives from G-cash and Maya, two leading digital financial service providers, were on hand to showcase the benefits and convenience of their mobile payment apps. They conducted live demonstrations and assisted individuals in setting up their accounts, ensuring a smooth transition to digital payments.
Other notable attendees included Atty. Dennis Gamaya, Area Director of BSP Lucena Branch; Jose Roberto Almeda Jr., Officer II-BSP South Luzon; Vice-Mayor Danny Liwanag; members of the Sangguniang Bayan; and heads of local government offices, further underscoring the significance of this initiative.
The Business Permit and Licensing Office, spearheaded by Reizl Hernandez, played a crucial role in organizing and executing this successful event.
Tagkawayan’s proactive stance in embracing digital payments sets a precedent for other towns in Quezon province. It is a testament to the town's commitment to progress and its vision for a more financially inclusive and technologically advanced future. The Paleng-QR Ph launch marks a significant step towards achieving that goal.
