INFANTA, Quezon - Over a thousand residents here recently found relief amidst rising food costs as they were able to purchase rice at a significantly reduced price of P29 per kilo on Tuesday.
This welcome development came as the NIA-CALABARZON successfully launched its "Murang Bigas sa NIA" program on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, as part of the KabayaNIAn agri-trade fair. The program ensured that senior citizens, Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program members, single parents, and persons with disabilities had access to this affordable staple.
NIA's Rice Contract Farming partnership with the Federation of AGOS River Irrigation System Farmers IA in Infanta, established in May, covers 79 hectares of rice farms. This guarantees a consistent supply of rice at a stable, affordable price.
Even Tropical Storm Enteng, which recently posed challenges to the region, couldn't derail the program's success. Farmers had begun their harvest in late August, ensuring ample supply to meet the increased demand.
NIA-4A Public Relations Officer Vince Santoalla announced that another cheap rice sale is scheduled at the agency's regional office in Pila, Laguna, on September 13th. This move will further extend the reach of this vital initiative, bringing relief to even more families in need.
The "Murang Bigas sa NIA @ P29/kg" program is a shining example of the government's proactive efforts to address food insecurity across the nation. It's part of a larger nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Agriculture on July 5, aiming to reach an impressive 6.9 million households.
The success in Infanta highlights the program's potential to make a significant impact on food security in the region and beyond. The NIA's commitment to fostering partnerships with local farmers and ensuring a consistent supply of affordable rice demonstrates a clear dedication to the well-being of Filipino families, even in the face of economic challenges.
