SARIAYA, Quezon – Israel Cesar Cantos, a native of Sariaya, Quezon, and a student at the University of Santo Tomas, recently made his hometown proud by winning the gold medal in the Men's - Kyorugi - 87 kg category at the prestigious Daegu 2024 World University Taekwondo Festival held in Daegu, South Korea, from July 5th to 7th, 2024.

In recognition of his outstanding achievements, the Provincial Government of Quezon honored Cantos during a special ceremony held at the Provincial Governor's Office on Thursday, September 5th, 2024.

Cantos' dedication and hard work in taekwondo have not only brought honor to his province but have also inspired countless young athletes. This latest victory adds to his already impressive list of accomplishments, which includes a bronze medal in taekwondo at the 31st South East Asian Games in Vietnam in 2022.

Cantos humbly attributed his success to his faith, stating in a Facebook post, "'When the time is right, I, the Lord, will make it happen.' Isaiah 60:22. All glory to Him for this achievement! I'm deeply thankful for the strength and blessings that led me here."

He also expressed his gratitude to his support system, saying, "This win wouldn't have been possible without the incredible support I've received. Thank you to my coaches, Sir Carlos and Sir Al, my family, teammates, and everyone who prayed for me. Maraming salamat po."

Cantos also received a warm welcome in his hometown of Sariaya. On Monday, August 5th, 2024, Sariaya Mayor Marcelo P. Gayeta personally congratulated Cantos upon his return from South Korea. The local government had previously recognized Cantos' achievement with a medal during a weekly flag-raising ceremony.

During the provincial ceremony, the governor of Quezon and other officials praised Cantos' exceptional performance. The event highlighted Cantos' unwavering dedication, relentless hard work, and perseverance, which led him to triumph on the international stage.

The governor emphasized the significance of Cantos' success, highlighting its positive impact on both the province and aspiring athletes throughout Quezon.
