Rotary Club Lucena City Maharlika empowers students for a peaceful and safe digital world
Community Affairs Officer IV—PGAD Officer, Atty. Cynthia Profeta, leads a seminar on peace and conflict resolution and anti-cyberbullying for 254 students at Ilayang Dupay Elementary School, Lucena City, Quezon, on September 12, 2024.

LUCENA CITY, Quezon - Recent studies alarmingly reveal that cyberviolence affects nearly half of all Filipino children and adolescents aged 13–17. Recognizing the urgent need to address this, the Rotary Club of Lucena City Maharlika under the initiative of its Charter President Doc. Albert Roces organized a crucial seminar on peace and conflict resolution and anti-cyberbullying, attended by 254 enthusiastic students at the Ilayang Dupay Elementary School.

The seminar not only delved into peaceful conflict resolution strategies but also tackled the pressing issue of cyberbullying. Led by one of its members and Community Affairs Officer IV—PGAD Officer, Atty. Cynthia Profeta, students gained valuable insights into managing disagreements constructively and promoting understanding among their peers. The importance of empathy, communication, and compromise in navigating conflicts was emphasized, along with the role of open dialogue in fostering a harmonious community.

Atty. Profeta, in her address, highlighted the importance of active listening, respecting diverse perspectives, and seeking win-win solutions in resolving conflicts peacefully. She also emphasized the role of open communication and dialogue in building strong relationships and fostering a harmonious community.

"In today's digital age, cyberbullying has become a pressing concern, affecting children and adolescents worldwide. The pervasive nature of technology has created new avenues for harassment and abuse, making it crucial to address this issue proactively. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, this seminar aimed to shed light on the various forms of cyberbullying and empower students to combat this harmful online behavior." Profeta said.

The seminar provided students with a comprehensive understanding of the different manifestations of cyberbullying. It highlighted harassment, a common form that involves sending offensive or threatening messages, spreading rumors, or making derogatory comments online. Impersonation, another prevalent form, involves creating fake profiles or accounts to humiliate or defame someone. The seminar also addressed outings and trickery, which involve sharing private information or embarrassing photos or videos without consent.

Additionally, Profeta emphasized the harmful effects of exclusion, which refers to intentionally leaving someone out of online groups or activities. "By educating students about the various forms of cyberbullying, the seminar aimed to equip them with the knowledge and tools to identify and respond to such situations. It emphasized the importance of empathy, respect, and responsible online behavior. The seminar encouraged students to speak up against cyberbullying, support victims, and create a safe and inclusive online environment for everyone." Profeta added.

She stressed the collective responsibility of society in addressing cyberbullying. While parenting, school interventions, and counseling play crucial roles, she highlighted the need for government intervention in cases where power dynamics and systemic issues contribute to bullying. Institutions like schools, as in the case of the Philippine High School for the Arts, must also proactively investigate and address allegations of abuse to ensure the safety and well-being of their students.

Atty. Profeta provided also essential guidance on identifying, preventing, and reporting cyberbullying, emphasizing the importance of creating a safe and respectful online environment. She shared practical tips on responsible online behavior, including being mindful of one's digital footprint, thinking before posting, and standing up against cyberbullying when witnessed. She also stressed the power of kindness and empathy in online interactions.

The Rotary Club of Lucena City Maharlika's proactive efforts in organizing this seminar exemplify their dedication to empowering the youth and fostering a positive social change. By instilling the values of peace, respect, and online responsibility, they are helping to build a future generation of compassionate and digitally savvy citizens in Lucena City.
