SARIAYA, Quezon - Mayor Marcelo Gayeta, who is currently serving his third term as mayor of this town, accompanied his wife Marivic Gayeta on Monday, October 7, 2024, as she filed her COC to run for mayor in the upcoming elections in May next year, under the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD), a political party whose president, Martin Romualdez, is the Speaker of the House.
Mayor Gayeta narrated in an interview with journalists after the COC filing that he has been with his wife since he was 15 years old and that she has been a close friend and mentor since the very beginning of his political journey. "I was with her 15 years old, and she has always been a source of support and inspiration. She shares my passion for serving our community, and this experience together has shown me that anyone can make a difference in the lives of others."
He stresses that his wife will play an active role in the town, for during his tenure his wife has been actively involved in various community projects and initiatives, demonstrating her dedication to the well-being of their town, and now he looks forward to working alongside her to continue making a positive impact.
According to him, his first actual exposure to public service was when he was elected as Sanggunian Kabataan chairman in their barangay before becoming mayor, and he said he intends to continue making a positive impact and not to hurt other people's interests. “It is no longer appropriate for a politician to hurt the feelings of others in the modern era; we need to lay out what we can do to our countrymen, and those who slander politicians can no longer be bought,” Gayeta said.
"We face a challenging situation, but we are determined to find a way forward. If my fellow citizens are willing to compromise and show respect, we will reciprocate. However, if they refuse to find common ground, we will take the necessary steps to address the situation. I will personally appeal to my fellow citizens, as I believe it is my duty as a public servant to unite our town." he added.
Sariaya, a first-class municipality in Quezon Province, Philippines, is poised to become a city in the near future. Its bid for cityhood is anchored on a robust population exceeding 200,000 residents, with 108,000 registered voters across its 43 barangays, and a substantial land area of 24,000 hectares. These factors, combined with a strong financial foundation, including a significant internal revenue allotment of P574 million from the national government, position Sariaya for a successful transition to city status.
Sariaya's strategic location along major transportation routes further enhances its potential for economic progress and urbanization. The municipality's economy is driven by a thriving agricultural sector, with its 24-hour vegetable depot serving as a vital distribution hub for farmers from neighboring provinces. This bustling center provides crucial employment and livelihood opportunities for Sariaya's residents.
Furthermore, Sariaya has attracted significant investments from prominent business leaders. Lance Gokongwei of Universal Robina Corporation is constructing a massive flour factory in the municipality, potentially the largest in the Philippines, promising to generate numerous jobs and stimulate economic growth. Ramon Ang of San Miguel Corporation has also made substantial investments in Sariaya, bolstering the local economy and providing land to help residents secure their own homes.
