LUCENA CITY, Quezon – Governor Angelina "Doktora Helen" Tan is taking no chances with Typhoon Kristine, which intensified into a tropical storm early Tuesday morning and has now placed the entire province of Quezon under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1.

The governor visited the Quezon Preparedness Operation Center (QPOC) today, Tuesday, October 22, to personally ensure that the province is fully prepared for the potential impact of the storm, which is expected to bring heavy rains and strong winds to the region.

"We are ready," Gov. Tan declared. "We have evacuation plans in place and are coordinating closely with all relevant agencies for immediate response." The governor stressed the importance of residents staying informed about the typhoon's progress and adhering to official safety protocols.

During the visit to QPOC, the governor inspected the warehouse stocked with relief goods. Rice, canned goods, coffee, and milk are ready for distribution to affected communities, particularly those in the REINA-POGI area, which is anticipated to be heavily impacted. "We especially urge residents in coastal areas to heed evacuation warnings and move to safer locations," she added.

She also clarified that mayors have the authority to suspend classes in their respective municipalities based on local conditions and emphasized the importance of staying updated on official announcements from local government units.

"It is not only the governor who has the right to suspend classes, but also the mayors who are more familiar with the situation in their own areas. Mayors play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of their constituents, especially during times of inclement weather or emergencies." she said.

According to PAGASA, Typhoon Kristine (international name: Trami) is currently packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph. It is moving westward at 15 kph and is expected to make landfall in the coming days. The storm poses a significant threat of flooding, landslides, and storm surges in vulnerable areas.

Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) Quezon has issued a Storm Surge Warning at 2:00 PM today. The warning indicates a minimal to moderate risk of storm surge within the next 48 hours. Residents in coastal areas, particularly in the municipalities of Burdeos, General Nakar, Jomalig, Panukulan, Patnanungan, and Polillo, are advised to take extra precautions due to the threat of high waves.

The public and disaster risk reduction and management offices are urged to take appropriate actions, remain vigilant, and monitor for updates. Gov. Tan also calling for unity and cooperation among all municipalities in the province to safeguard residents and ensure a swift and effective response to Typhoon Kristine.
