LUCENA CITY, Quezon - Deputy Speaker David "Jayjay" Suarez, Quezon incumbent Representative for 2nd district, on Monday, October 7, 2024 announced their candidacy for re-election to the House of Representatives.
He previously served as governor of Quezon from 2010 to 2019, vice governor of Quezon from 2004 to 2007, and councilor of Unisan from 2001 to 2004. He is known for his dedication to serving his constituents and advocating for their needs at the national level.
Of the provincial lawmakers in the province, Suarez is the only one who is not an ally of reelectionist Governor Angelina Tan. In 2019, he was elected to represent Quezon's 2nd district. He was re-elected in 2022 and rejoined Lakas-CMD ahead of the 19th Congress. Suarez was appointed Deputy Speaker on January 29, 2024, taking over for Ralph Recto, who had left the House to become Finance Secretary.
“The real challenge for us is to make sure that this unity that we can achieve in our province will be felt and can bring about change in the lives of our people,” said Suarez in an interview with journalists after the COC filing. He emphasized unity among Quezon officials regardless of political stripe.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we have to make sure that it will work. We need to be able to be responsible enough, mature enough, and set aside our own political interests and ambitions for the greater glory and welfare of the people,” he added.
Rep. Suarez, a lawmaker currently serving in the House of Representatives, recently called on senators to give fair consideration to the lower chamber's proposal to amend the economic provisions of the 1987 Constitution. This initiative aims to attract increased foreign investment in the country.
He urged the Senate to thoroughly examine House Bill (HB) 7352, which provides details on conducting a hybrid constitutional convention to discuss these amendments. He emphasized that the Senate should engage in plenary debates on the bill's merits rather than prematurely dismissing it as a low-priority issue.
As of Monday, Suarez’s reelection bid will be unopposed since no politicians in the province have yet to file COCs to challenge him. Suarez has been vocal about his commitment to pushing for economic reforms that will benefit the Filipino people. He believes that amending the Constitution to allow for more foreign investment is a crucial step towards achieving this goal.
