MAUBAN, Quezon – "Coal and gas have no place in Quezon! Go for renewable energy, reject coal and liquefied natural gas (lng) now!" These were the rallying cries that recently echoed through the streets of Mauban, Quezon, as hundreds of protesters marched against the continued reliance on fossil fuels. Carrying signs and banners, they demanded a shift towards clean energy sources, their voices a powerful chorus of dissent in a province long dominated by coal and gas.
Mauban, home to major coal-fired power plants operated by companies like Team Energy Corporation and Quezon Power (Philippines), Limited Co., is at the epicenter of this movement. The air, thick with the smell of coal dust, hangs heavy over the community – a constant, visible reminder of the pollution that residents fear is jeopardizing their health. This palpable threat has galvanized the community, pushing them to actively seek a transition to cleaner energy sources.
Driven by this fear and a desire for a healthier future, residents recently organized prayer rallies to coincide with the Global Day of Action led by the WagGas group and the Power for People (P4P) Coalition. Hundreds of citizens from environmental, youth, community, and church groups participated, their collective voices amplifying the growing concern about the detrimental effects of fossil fuels.
Fueling these concerns is a 2022 study by the Center for Energy, Ecology, and Development (CEED), which revealed that Quezon's air quality had fallen below standards set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). This alarming finding provides concrete evidence of the environmental damage caused by fossil fuels, further strengthening the residents' resolve to fight for change.
In response to this growing evidence and public pressure, a representative from the P4P Coalition declared, "We are calling for a just transition to clean and renewable energy sources. The continued reliance on fossil fuels not only threatens our environment but also jeopardizes the health and well-being of our communities."
The P4P Coalition believes that a healthy population is essential for the province's sustainable development. They advocate for a shift towards cleaner energy sources to safeguard the health of current and future generations in Quezon, recognizing that a healthy environment is the foundation for a healthy and thriving community.
To illustrate the urgent need for change, the P4P representative pointed to the significant environmental impact of coal: "Coal is known to be the cheapest and easiest to mine, but it is also responsible for 40% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, a major greenhouse gas." Furthermore, the representative emphasized the direct link between coal and the worsening effects of global warming, such as the increasing frequency and intensity of storms. "We cannot ignore the long-term consequences of fossil fuel dependence," they warned, stressing the need for a proactive approach to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
Adding his voice to the growing movement, environmental advocate Kasama ng Kalikasan stated, "Coal is the cheapest and easiest to get or mine, but it's also responsible for 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions." He further highlighted the destructive nature of fossil fuel extraction: "Apart from the worsening of global warming, which is causing stronger storms, fossil fuel mining destroys the natural environment.”
Kasama ng Kalikasan urged a shift away from these destructive practices, stating, "We need to stop clinging to outdated and destructive energy sources. The Philippines is blessed with abundant renewable resources. Geothermal, wind, hydro, solar – these are the keys to a brighter future for Quezon and the entire country." He envisions a future where the Philippines harnesses its natural resources to achieve energy independence and environmental sustainability.
Drawing inspiration from international examples, he passionately urged the nation to follow the lead of European countries: "They're already reaping the benefits of clean energy – reducing pollution, creating jobs, and securing their energy independence. Why are we lagging behind?" Kasama ng Kalikasan believes that the Philippines can learn from these success stories and accelerate its own transition to renewable energy.
Beyond the detrimental effects of greenhouse gas emissions, Kasama ng Kalikasan also highlighted the direct environmental damage caused by the extraction and transportation of fossil fuels. "Oil spills can devastate marine ecosystems and coastlines," he explained, "while coal mining often leads to deforestation, soil erosion, and water contamination." These practices, he argued, leave a lasting scar on the environment and jeopardize the well-being of local communities.
The residents of Quezon, witnessing the environmental degradation firsthand, are determined to protect their natural resources. They are calling for an end to the destructive practices associated with fossil fuel extraction and demanding a shift towards renewable energy sources. This demand stems not only from a desire to protect the environment but also from a deep understanding of the interconnectedness between human well-being and a healthy ecosystem.
