PEREZ, Quezon—Lamon Bay's fight against illegal fishing received a significant boost with the arrival of a new high-speed patrol boat. The 40-foot vessel, delivered to the Perez local government, boasts triple 150 HP engines capable of reaching 55 knots. This acquisition represents a renewed commitment to safeguarding the bay's marine resources and the livelihoods of local fishermen.
"This patrol boat is a game-changer," stated Mayor Charizze Marie Escalona, her voice filled with gratitude. "It's a testament to the dedication and collaborative spirit of everyone involved. We are incredibly grateful to Governor Angelina 'Doktora Helen' Tan for her unwavering support and for prioritizing the needs of our fishing communities."
Escalona added, "This vessel allows us to increase patrols and respond swiftly to illegal activities, ensuring a sustainable future for Lamon Bay. This investment strengthens our fight against illegal fishing and demonstrates our commitment to protecting the livelihoods of our fishermen. We are determined to preserve the ecological balance of Lamon Bay for generations to come."
Operated jointly by the provincial government, the Coast Guard, and the PNP Maritime, the patrol boat will ensure a coordinated approach to patrolling the bay and apprehending those engaged in illegal fishing.
Spearheading this initiative, Governor Tan emphasized her commitment to eradicating illegal fishing in Quezon. "Securing funds for these tactical watercraft was a top priority," she affirmed during the turnover ceremony.
"We are determined to protect the livelihoods of our small fishermen," she declared. "We will combat the illegal fishing methods, such as blast fishing and the use of cyanide, that threaten the delicate balance of our marine ecosystem. These practices deplete fish stocks, damage critical habitats like coral reefs, and disrupt the entire food chain. We must stand firm against them."
"This patrol boat is just one component of our comprehensive strategy," Governor Tan added. "We are also focused on strengthening law enforcement by increasing penalties for offenders and improving surveillance technology. We are committed to collaborating with local communities to monitor and report illegal activities. Their knowledge and cooperation are invaluable to our success."
Beyond combating illegal fishing, Governor Tan is dedicated to improving healthcare and economic opportunities in Quezon. During her visit, she oversaw the distribution of TUPAD program wages to hundreds of residents—372 beneficiaries in Alabat, 334 in Perez, and 405 in Quezon—and expressed gratitude for the support of Senator Grace Poe and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
She also inspected the ongoing renovations at the Quezon Provincial Hospital Network—Alabat, highlighting the improved healthcare services the new structure will provide.
Governor Tan's comprehensive approach to governance brings tangible benefits to the people of Quezon. She prioritizes the fight against illegal fishing while simultaneously addressing healthcare and economic needs.
"Eradicating illegal fishing in Lamon Bay requires a multi-faceted strategy that includes strengthening law enforcement, interagency collaboration, community involvement, promoting sustainable fishing methods, and raising consumer awareness," she explained.
"By combining these efforts, Lamon Bay can move towards a future where its marine resources are protected and its fishing communities thrive," she continued. "I believe that by focusing on these key areas, we can create a more sustainable and prosperous future for all residents of Quezon."
