TAYABAS CITY, Quezon - A whisper of rebellion echoes through the streets of Tayabas City as it prepares to commemorate the 183rd anniversary of Hermano Puli's martyrdom. Two poignant films, "PAGSAMO KAY PULI" and "PASYON NI HERMANO PULI," will illuminate the life and struggle of this courageous Filipino who dared to challenge the established order.

From November 6 to 30, 2024, the public is invited to step into Casa Communidad and experience these powerful cinematic tributes. The screenings, held Monday to Friday between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, coincide with the national government's recent declaration of November 4 as a special non-working day in Quezon province to commemorate Hermano Puli's enduring legacy.

"Hermano Puli's story is one of unwavering faith and courage," shares Tayabas City Office of Culture and Arts. "These films capture the essence of his struggle for religious freedom and social justice. We hope they will inspire viewers to reflect on his sacrifices and the importance of upholding these values today."

They continues, "We believe it's crucial to make these films accessible to everyone, especially our youth. By understanding Hermano Puli's legacy, we hope to instill in them a sense of pride in our history and a commitment to fighting for what is right."

Born in Lucban, Quezon, Hermano Puli founded the Cofradía de San José in 1832, a religious order exclusively for Filipinos. This bold initiative challenged the racial discrimination deeply ingrained within the Spanish colonial Catholic Church. His execution on November 4, 1841, in Tayabas, marked a tragic yet pivotal moment in the Philippines' fight for religious freedom.

The recent declaration of November 4 as a special non-working holiday, formalized through Proclamation 730, underscores Hermano Puli's profound impact on the province and the nation. It is a testament to Hermano Puli's enduring legacy and recognizes the enduring relevance of his struggle for equality and justice.

Quezon Province Remembers a Hero

The spirit of Apolinario dela Cruz, better known as "Hermano Puli," burned bright despite the downpour as the province of Quezon commemorated the 183rd anniversary of his death on Monday.

Governor Angelina "Doktora Helen" Tan led the ceremony in Isabang, Tayabas City, alongside Mayor Lovely Reynoso-Pontioso, government officials, and representatives from the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police to honor Hermano Puli's heroism, contributions, and sacrifice in fighting for the rights and welfare of the people.

"God is truly good. We are all enjoying the peace left by Hermano Puli, so as Quezonians, we should work together to enrich and enjoy the wealth that the province of Quezon has," stated Governor Tan. She also announced her request to Congress to declare November 4th an official holiday in Quezon Province to commemorate Hermano Puli's death.

Governor Tan emphasized the importance of Hermano Puli's legacy, particularly his struggle for social justice. She urged government employees to prioritize programs that benefit the people, such as education, health, and infrastructure projects.

Echoing these sentiments, local governments across Quezon province organized commemorative events to ensure that Hermano Puli's legacy continues to resonate throughout the region. These events included lectures, exhibits, and cultural performances to educate the public about Hermano Puli's contributions to Philippine history.

Hermano Puli's story remains a powerful symbol of Filipino identity and the pursuit of religious freedom. His Cofradía de San José, though suppressed by Spanish forces in the 1840s, ignited the flames of resistance that would later fuel the Philippine Revolution.

In Tayabas City, the Office of Culture and Arts is promoting screenings of the films "PAGSAMO KAY PULI" and "PASYON NI HERMANO PULI" to further educate the public about Hermano Puli's life and legacy.

"Through these screenings," stated the Tayabas City Office of Culture and Arts, "we hope to spark conversations about faith, freedom, and social responsibility. Hermano Puli's story is a reminder that even in the face of adversity, we must stand up for what we believe in."

Those interested in scheduling a viewing of the films are encouraged to contact the Tayabas Culture and Arts Office or visit their Facebook page.
