TAYABAS CITY, Quezon – After facing significant losses due to a recent wave of pest infestations that ravaged their crops, 83 farmers from Tayabas City received much-needed relief. The Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) Regional Office 4 distributed a total of P527,367 in indemnity checks during a ceremony held at the New Tayabas City Hall this Tuesday, November 19, 2024.

Mayor Lovely Reynoso-Pontioso led the distribution of the checks, joined by City Councilors Elsa Rubio and Luz Cuadra. PCIC Insurance Processor Aljane Mharu E. Oabel and City Agriculturist Rommel Abuyan were also present to ensure the smooth and efficient distribution of the financial aid.

"This assistance is a testament to the government's commitment to supporting our farmers, especially during challenging times like these when pests threaten their livelihoods," Mayor Reynoso-Pontioso stated. "We are grateful to the PCIC for their swift action in processing these claims and providing this much-needed relief to our agricultural sector."

She added, "Our farmers are the backbone of our local economy, and their well-being is a top priority for our administration. We want to ensure that they have the support they need to overcome these challenges and continue to provide food for our community."

Mayor Reynoso-Pontioso also emphasized the importance of preparedness and resilience in the face of agricultural risks. "We encourage all our farmers to enroll in the PCIC program," she said. "It is a valuable investment that can provide a safety net during times of unexpected loss. We will continue to work with the PCIC and other agencies to strengthen our support for the agricultural sector and ensure its sustainability."

The recent pest infestation caused significant damage to various crops, impacting the livelihoods of many farmers in Tayabas City. The PCIC, a government-owned and controlled corporation, plays a crucial role in safeguarding the agricultural sector by providing insurance protection against losses arising from natural calamities, plant diseases, and pest infestations.
This payout highlights the importance of crop insurance in mitigating the risks faced by farmers and ensuring the stability of agricultural production. The PCIC remains steadfast in its mission to support Filipino farmers and promote agricultural resilience in the face of various challenges.

City Agriculturist Rommel Abuyan emphasized the importance of farmers enrolling in the PCIC program. "We strongly encourage all farmers to register with the PCIC to avail themselves of this valuable safety net. This will help protect their livelihoods and ensure the continued growth of our agricultural sector," Abuyan said.

The PCIC continues to work closely with local government units and farmers' organizations to increase awareness about crop insurance and expand its reach to more farmers across the country. Through these partnerships, the PCIC aims to provide comprehensive support and assistance to farmers in times of crop loss or damage.
