TAYABAS CITY, Quezon –The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) recently delivered 20 units of "Portasol" multi-purpose solar speed drying trays to the Samahan sa Industriya ng Cacao na Pangkabuhayan (SICAP) Quezon Agricultural Cooperative in Tayabas City.

This initiative aims to boost cacao production and improve the livelihoods of local farmers by significantly enhancing their cacao bean drying process. The DOST recognizes the potential of cacao as a high-value crop that can contribute to the region's economic growth.

SICAP, a cooperative representing cacao farmers across 38 municipalities and two cities in Quezon province, currently produces over 1,700 kg of dried fermented cacao beans. The organization recognizes cacao production as a key driver for economic growth and aims to uplift the livelihoods of its members through this initiative.

To support SICAP's goals, DOST provided the Portasol units, which feature tiered trays, a pyramid roof rack, and a protective hood. These features are specifically designed to optimize the drying process for cacao beans.

This innovative technology offers several advantages. It reduces drying time, allowing for faster processing even in unfavorable weather conditions. It also minimizes spoilage by preventing mildew, rot, and pest infestations, problems often associated with traditional drying methods.

Additionally, the Portasol units improve the quality of the cacao beans by protecting them from contaminants like road dust. The units' multi-level stacking design also increases storage efficiency, further streamlining the post-harvest process for farmers.

"By improving drying practices, cacao farmers can increase productivity and product quality, enabling them to compete more effectively in the market," stated Aldwin Royena, Science Research Specialist II and focal person for DOST-Quezon's Community-Based Project.

This initiative by DOST-Quezon underscores the department's commitment to empowering local farmers and promoting agricultural advancement through technology and innovation.

By investing in these modern drying technologies, DOST contributes to the overall growth and development of the cacao industry in Quezon province, fostering economic progress within the region.
