LUCENA CITY, Quezon - The Multipurpose Hall of the Lucena City Government Complex was filled with the joyous sounds of children as daycare students performed for Mayor Mark "Kuya Mark" Alcala during the 2024 State of the Children Address. This heartwarming event underscored the city's commitment to its youth.
Mayor Alcala, addressing the audience, stressed that "Investing in our children is investing in the future of Lucena. Their well-being is our top priority." He then detailed the city's robust programs and policies designed to support children.
One key initiative is the Movement Against Malnutrition (MAMA) program, a city-wide effort to combat malnutrition through supplemental feeding programs, nutrition education, and improved healthcare access. "We are committed to ensuring that every child in Lucena has access to nutritious food and the opportunity to grow healthy and strong," Mayor Alcala affirmed.
Expanding on healthcare, he introduced the new Lucena Health Program led by the City Health Office. This program aims to broaden healthcare access for children and families through free medical check-ups, vaccinations, and dental services. "Access to quality healthcare is a fundamental right," the mayor explained, "and we are working tirelessly to make that a reality for all our children."
To further support education, Mayor Alcala announced the continuation of the program providing free school supplies to students, easing the financial strain on families. He also highlighted the Presidential Care Service Program, a national initiative that provides comprehensive support to vulnerable children, including those who are orphaned, abandoned, or facing abuse.
"We believe that education is the key to a brighter future," Mayor Alcala stated. "By providing free school supplies and supporting programs like the Presidential Care Service, we are empowering our children to reach their full potential."
Protecting children from harm is another key focus. Mayor Alcala discussed strengthening programs that safeguard children from abuse and violence, both at home and in the community. This includes increased support for the Lucena City Protection Center (LCPC), which offers crucial services like counseling, legal assistance, and temporary shelter to child victims of abuse, exploitation, and neglect.
The State of the Children Address was a key part of Lucena City's participation in the 32nd National Children's Month, themed "Break the Prevalence, End the Violence: Protecting Children, Creating a Safe Philippines." The Social Welfare and Development Office spearheaded the city's efforts for this national observance.
Demonstrating a commitment to protecting all vulnerable individuals, Mayor Alcala also participated in the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women Kick-off Ceremony. This annual campaign aims to raise awareness about violence against women and girls and promote gender equality through activities like awareness-raising seminars, community dialogues, and the dissemination of informational materials.
Beyond his focus on children's welfare, Mayor Alcala also honored the legacy of Gat Andres Bonifacio. On November 30th, he participated in a ceremony at the Bonifacio monument in Pleasantville Barangay Ilayang Iyam, Lucena City, to commemorate Bonifacio Day.
In his address, he emphasized the importance of courage, unity, and love for country—values embodied by Bonifacio. "The spirit of Gat Andres Bonifacio is a reminder that true love for country is measured by our actions for the betterment of our community," Mayor Alcala proclaimed. "Let us continue to live out his courage and concern for the nation."
This Bonifacio Day ceremony was attended by local government officials, teachers, students, and various community members. Flowers were offered at the monument to honor Bonifacio's contribution to Philippine independence.
The State of the Children Address also drew a diverse crowd, with attendees including City Councilor Nick Pedro, City Administrator Beth Sio, department heads, Lucena City Protection Center (LCPC) members, daycare workers, and parents, all eager to learn about the city's initiatives for children.
