TAYABAS CITY, Quezon – A coalition of concerned citizens, known as the Nagkakaisang Panawagan ng mga Mamamayan ng Quezon o Mamamayan Laban sa Quarry (MLQ), is actively campaigning against quarrying and other destructive projects that threaten the province's natural resources. They are raising awareness about the detrimental impact of these activities on the environment and the cultural heritage of Quezon Province.

The MLQ emphasizes the deep connection between the people of Quezon and their natural surroundings, highlighting how the environment has shaped their way of life for generations. They argue that quarrying not only destroys vital ecosystems but also erodes the cultural heritage inextricably linked to the land.

Spurred to action by the escalating destruction, the MLQ recently organized a "Lakad Dasal para sa Kalikasan" (Prayer Walk for the Environment), which saw hundreds of residents take to the streets to protest the devastating effects of quarrying. The demonstration brought together residents, local officials, and religious leaders in a powerful display of unity and a call for sustainable practices.

Fr. Warren Puno, one of the organizers, addressed the crowd, his voice filled with urgency: "This is not just about rocks and trees; this is about our heritage, our identity! Our rivers, mountains, and seas are not just sources of livelihood. They are integral to our history and our future. We cannot stand by and watch them be destroyed."

The MLQ is demanding an immediate moratorium on all quarrying activities. They point to the severe damage already inflicted by river quarrying in Tayabas City, mountain quarrying in Pagbilao, and seabed quarrying in Tayabas Bay. These practices, they argue, disrupt delicate ecosystems, endanger biodiversity, and poison the water that sustains communities.

"For generations, these natural features have provided sustenance, shaped our way of life, and fostered a deep sense of connection to the land," explained an MLQ representative. "Quarrying tears at the very heart of our province, leaving scars that run deeper than any excavation."

This outcry against quarrying comes in the wake of increasing concerns over its environmental impact in Quezon Province. Recent reports from environmental groups like Tanggol Kalikasan have revealed a resurgence of illegal quarrying activities on the slopes of Mt. Banahaw, despite a moratorium order from Governor Angelina Tan.

These illegal operations threaten the delicate ecosystem of the mountain and its surrounding areas. Furthermore, residents in Sariaya have raised concerns about the dangers of quarrying near Mt. Banahaw, citing risks of landslides and flooding.

Tayabas City Mayor Lovely Reynoso-Pontioso has taken a firm stance against quarrying, vowing to safeguard the city's natural treasures. The Tayabas City Council has followed suit, passing a resolution calling for the revocation of existing quarry permits and a complete ban on future quarrying activities.

The MLQ, spearheaded by convenors like Kap Amiel Romana and Fr. Raul Enriquez, is calling on all citizens to join their fight. Their message is clear: "Protect our environment for our safety! Banahaw is hope, it should not cause disaster and suffering to the people! Forests, rivers, seas, and mountains should be inherited, not destroyed and quarried!"

To further strengthen their cause, the MLQ has given a voice to those directly impacted by quarrying. Residents from affected communities in Tayabas, Sariaya, Pagbilao, and Atimonan have bravely shared their stories, painting a stark picture of the consequences of unchecked development. These personal accounts have resonated deeply with the public, adding an emotional weight to the campaign.

This grassroots uprising serves as a powerful reminder that environmental protection is a collective responsibility. The MLQ's "Lakad Dasal para sa Kalikasan" is an inspiring example of how a community can unite to safeguard its natural heritage for generations to come.
