Sariaya, Quezon – Ten teams of volunteers from the Municipal Auxiliary Volunteers in the Community (MAVIC) participated in a Rescue Challenge on December 6, putting their disaster response skills to the test. This event was organized by the Sariaya Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) in partnership with the Quezon Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).
The challenge simulated a range of emergency scenarios, requiring volunteers to act quickly and decisively. The scenarios included administering first aid to simulated victims and demonstrating proficiency in rescue techniques. Volunteers were also tested on their ability to work collaboratively under pressure to overcome challenges, such as those presented by collapsed structures or hazardous material spills.
The competition environment aimed to accurately reflect the demands and stress of real-life emergencies, ensuring the volunteers are well-prepared for any disaster situation. To further enhance their preparedness, MAVIC members also participated in an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) Campaign at the Sariaya Sports Complex on December 3rd.
This campaign, led by the MDRRMO, focused on educating community members about disaster risks and preparedness strategies. MDRRM Officer Sinforoso Martinez Jr., Municipal Engineer Victor Alviso, and other experts delivered informative presentations, equipping residents with the knowledge to protect themselves and their families during emergencies.
"MAVIC is an invaluable asset in protecting Sariaya," stated Martinez Jr., highlighting the importance of investing in volunteer training and skills development. "These initiatives not only empower individuals with life-saving skills but also cultivate a culture of preparedness and community resilience," he added, echoing the national government's focus on community-based disaster risk reduction and management.
The dedication of the MAVIC volunteers has earned widespread praise. Local officials lauded the success of both the Rescue Challenge and the IEC Campaign, recognizing the need for continued investment in these critical programs.
A panel of experts from PDRRMO, including Mr. Omega D. Lacandola, Mr. Roy Christopher V. Carpio, Mr. Omar D. Gajo, Mr. Cesar Ryan C. Ellaga, and Mr. Niel A. Parco, served as judges for the Rescue Challenge, evaluating teams on speed, efficiency, safety procedures, and adherence to protocols.
