GENERAL NAKAR, Quezon - As residents in flood-prone areas along the left bank of the Catanauan River breathe a sigh of relief, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announces the successful completion of a crucial flood control project. This endeavor, spearheaded by DPWH Region 4A under Director Jovel Mendoza's leadership, addresses the persistent flooding that has troubled Barangay 10 for years. The newly established flood control system marks a significant step towards ensuring the safety and security of the community.
Historically, the Catanauan River, known for its strong currents and vulnerability to heavy rainfall, has been a source of significant flooding in the region. These floods have led to loss of life, damage to infrastructure, and displacement of communities, with negative environmental consequences like soil erosion and water contamination. The impact has been widespread, disrupting essential sectors such as agriculture and fishing, and forcing evacuations due to the destruction of homes, roads, and bridges.
The P74.2 million project, a key initiative of DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan, features a newly constructed flood control structure. This structure, comprising a 183.20-meter section and a 72-meter section, strategically closes the gap between two pre-existing structures to create an integrated system for enhanced flood protection.
"This project will serve as a vital protective barrier, safeguarding residential areas, roads, plantations, and critical infrastructure from the devastating impacts of floods," stated Secretary Bonoan. He further emphasized the project's significance, adding, "It is a testament to our dedication to the safety and well-being of the people of Catanauan."
The completion of this flood control project promises numerous benefits for the residents of Barangay 10. It is anticipated to reduce flood risks, enhance safety and security, stimulate economic activity, and improve the overall quality of life. Through minimizing the impact of future floods, the project aims to protect homes and businesses, provide a safer living environment, and enable economic recovery and growth.
This project signifies a crucial investment in Catanauan's future, demonstrating a commitment to the long-term safety and well-being of its residents. The proactive measures taken by the DPWH and the local government highlight a dedication to infrastructure development and community protection, laying the groundwork for a more resilient Catanauan.
Investing in flood control allows Catanauan to build a foundation for sustainable growth and an enhanced quality of life for all its citizens. A representative from the DPWH emphasized the broader vision behind this initiative: "This is not just about protecting Catanauan from immediate threats, but about fostering a sustainable future where communities can thrive without the constant fear of flooding. We believe this project will play a key role in achieving that vision."
General Nakar Mayor Esee Ruzol recently led a site inspection and validation for a proposed flood control project in Barangay Anoling. Conducted on January 16, 2025, the inspection included representatives from DPWH IV-A, Silverwolves Construction Corporation, Juntereal Industrial and Development Corporation, and the Municipal Engineering Office.
This proactive approach to flood management reflects a dedication to assessing and addressing potential risks in other areas. Such initiatives underscore the ongoing commitment to protecting lives and property from the threat of flooding and promoting the continuous development of Catanauan.
