MAUBAN, Quezon - The life and martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal, the Philippines' national hero, continue to inspire generations. To commemorate the 128th anniversary of his martyrdom, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) recently held the Hagod-Rizal program at Museo ni Jose Rizal, Fort Santiago, Intramuros, Manila.
The Hagod-Rizal annual event fosters artistic expression, honors national heroes and enhances public understanding of Philippine history and culture. This year's event showcased artworks from talented artists nationwide, exploring "Rizal's Legacy Towards Unity, Hope and Change" Quezon Province's diverse artistic contingent played a key role.
The exhibit featured diverse artistic interpretations of Rizal's life, works and enduring legacy, reflecting various perspectives and styles. This collaborative effort involved Museo ng Kasaysayan Maritime, Telesforo Saravia Foundation and UE-ART, promoting cross-cultural understanding and artistic innovation.
Established in 1933, NHCP preserves and promotes Philippine history and culture through historical research, museum management and cultural heritage conservation. Dr. Jose Rizal's influential writings, particularly "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo," sparked the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonial rule.
His legacy extends beyond literature, inspiring generations to fight for freedom, national identity and social justice. Nationwide events included flag-raising ceremonies and wreath-laying ceremonies at historic sites like Rizal Park in Manila, the Rizal Shrine in Calamba and the Rizal Shrine in Dapitan City.
The "Remembering Rizal in Artworks and Monuments" exhibit at NHCP Central Office showcased Rizal's enduring impact. Participating artists from Quezon Province included Amel M. Pabello, April A. Sabelua, April R. Enriquez, Christian A. Dinglasan, Dennis S. Danda, Elmer M. Ebreo and Emmanuel O. Invento, among others.
Tristan Bamba, a skilled muralist from Mauban Arts, Culture and Tourism Office, facilitated portraiture coffee painting workshops, sharing expertise and inspiring innovative approaches among participating artists. Quezon Province boasts vibrant traditions in wood carving, weaving, pottery and bamboo craft.
Renowned festivals like Pagdiriwang ng Sining sa Lucena and Quezon National Artist Foundation showcase the province's rich cultural landscape. Celebrating Rizal's legacy encouraged unity and national pride during the Hagod-Rizal event, which fostered artistic expression, mentorship and knowledge sharing among artists.
Commemorations demonstrated the nation's dedication to honoring Rizal's legacy, solidifying his importance in Philippine history. This celebration serves as a reminder of Rizal's significant contributions to the country's struggle for independence and freedom.
