CANDELARIA, Quezon - Mayor George "Ogie" Suayan expressed strong support for SteelAsia's investment, calling it a "landmark occasion" that will bring new jobs and prosperity to the people of Candelaria. He emphasized the positive impact it will have on the local community, particularly in improving livelihoods and opportunities. "This is a major development for our municipality," he remarked, "and we are fully prepared to support SteelAsia in this endeavor."

This was followed by the announcement from SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp., the Philippines' leading steel producer, outlining plans to construct a massive P30-billion steel plant in Candelaria. The facility is poised to become a game-changer in the domestic construction and infrastructure sectors. The groundbreaking ceremony for this project was actually held back on April 29, 2019, marking the beginning of this exciting journey for Candelaria.

Mayor Suayan added, "We are incredibly proud to partner with SteelAsia on this groundbreaking project. This is a testament to our unwavering commitment to progress, job creation, and sustainable development in Candelaria. We are confident that this steel plant will serve as a catalyst for economic growth, not just within our municipality, but for the entire nation. We eagerly anticipate the plant's completion and the countless opportunities it will bring to our community and beyond."

According to SteelAsia, the plant, slated to commence operations by 2027, will specialize in the production of heavy structural steel products such as H beams, I beams, angles, channels, sheet piles, and plates. These products are currently 100% imported, making the project crucial in reducing the country's reliance on foreign steel. SteelAsia's decision to build in Candelaria speaks volumes about the town's potential. As Governor Suarez noted, investors like SteelAsia seek locations with strong leadership and a stable environment, free from corruption and disorder.

"We will create around 7,000 jobs instead of giving jobs to China, Vietnam, Thailand, Korea and Japan, our major suppliers," said SteelAsia Chairman and CEO Benjamin Yao. "Our carbon footprint will also be 90 percent lower than the traditional steelmaking process because we use recycled scrap metal and employ electric arc furnace technology." This commitment to sustainability aligns with the growing global emphasis on environmentally friendly practices in the steel industry.

The Candelaria plant is expected to generate significant economic benefits, including an estimated USD 1.2 billion in annual savings for the country. Furthermore, it will significantly reduce delivery lead times for crucial steel components, improving project completion timelines and lowering costs for infrastructure projects nationwide.

"This is a game changer initially for the construction and infrastructure sector since this means quicker project completion and lower costs," Yao added. The plant will utilize the latest European steel technology to produce over one million tons of structural steel annually, ensuring high-quality output for various construction needs.

This ambitious project is part of SteelAsia's broader initiative to establish the country's first integrated steel industry, boosting domestic steel production and contributing to national economic growth. The local government is committed to supporting SteelAsia's operations and fostering a conducive atmosphere for business growth and development.

SteelAsia has awarded the engineering, procurement, and construction management contract to MCC Huatian Engineering & Technology Co., Ltd., a renowned firm with extensive experience in constructing steel plants globally. This partnership guarantees the project's successful execution and adherence to international standards.
