LUCENA CITY, Quezon - Governance in Quezon Province has taken a proactive stance against cybercrime with the activation of its Provincial Cyber Response Team (QPCRT) and a significant investment in essential equipment. The QPCRT will play a crucial role in providing rapid response and action against online criminals, aiming to protect citizens and ensure their safety in the digital realm.
The QPCRT was officially activated on Tuesday, February 18, at Camp BGen Guillermo Nakar, with the signing of a Deed of Donation for essential equipment. This significant event was marked by a ceremony where Governor Angelina "Helen" Tan was bestowed with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Reserve Force, recognizing her dedicated service to the province.
The establishment of the QPCRT demonstrates Quezon Province's strong commitment to combating the escalating threat of cyber scams. These deceptive schemes, which exploit technology to defraud individuals and compromise their personal information, have become increasingly prevalent.
Governor Tan emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "Many online scammers utilize emails, social media, and fake websites to appear legitimate, posing as reputable companies or individuals with good intentions. This has prompted law enforcement and the Provincial Government to take decisive action."
To enhance the capabilities of law enforcement agencies in the fight against cybercrime, the Provincial Government, under Governor Tan's leadership, has invested in state-of-the-art equipment. This includes laptops, printers, and computers, which will significantly aid in the detection and apprehension of online criminals.
The newly rehabilitated Detective Office at Camp BGen Guillermo Nakar was blessed during the ceremony. This upgraded facility will provide a more conducive and efficient environment for investigators to handle cases related to cyberscams and other criminal activities within the province.
"These initiatives represent a broader strategy by the Provincial Government to raise public awareness about the dangers of cyberscams and empower Quezonians to protect themselves from falling victim to these deceptive practices," Governor Tan stated.
She also reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating closely with local law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and order throughout the province. Cybercrime, with its various forms such as phishing emails, social media fraud, and online shopping scams, poses a significant and evolving threat globally. The consequences of falling victim to these schemes can be devastating, ranging from financial loss and identity theft to severe emotional distress.
The QPCRT is specifically trained and equipped to investigate and respond to a wide range of cybercrimes, including online scams, hacking, and cyberbullying. By working in close collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, the team aims to apprehend cybercriminals and bring them to justice. Beyond enforcement, the QPCRT is dedicated to educating the public about cyber threats and providing comprehensive guidance on online safety measures.
Earlier on, Governor Tan received a visit from officials of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) 59IB 2ID PA, led by Lieutenant Colonel Ferdinand Bruce Tokong. LTC Tokong informed the Governor of his upcoming reassignment and provided a reassuring security update regarding the first and second districts of Quezon.
The AFP confirmed the absence of security threats and the non-presence of communist terrorist groups in the province. Governor Tan expressed her appreciation and emphasized the importance of maintaining a secure environment for all Quezonians. The AFP reiterated their unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of every citizen.
Following the QPCRT activation, the Commissioning and Donning of Ranks Ceremony for Governor Tan was held at Camp Guillermo Nakar. This momentous occasion was attended by high-ranking military officials, family members, Board Members, and leaders from various departments of the Quezon Provincial Government. LTGEN Facundo Palafox IV PA, Commander of the Southern Luzon Command (SOLCOM), led the ceremony and assisted Governor Tan in her oath-taking.
Governor Tan expressed her gratitude for the recognition and emphasized that her new rank signifies a deeper commitment to serving the people of Quezon. She views this as an opportunity to further strengthen the collaboration between the Provincial Government and the AFP in safeguarding the province and ensuring a secure and peaceful environment for all Quezonians.
