GENERAL LUNA, Quezon - General Luna Mayor Matt Erwin Florido, who is running for representative in the 3rd District of Quezon province, has challenged his opponent, Rep. Reynan Arrogancia, to a public discussion on major issues affecting Bondoc Peninsula people.
Florido recently stated that he is willing to face Arrogancia at any time and from any location in order to engage in constructive debate that will assist voters in making educated decisions on 2015 midterm election day.
The challenge was issued via Facebook. Floridos's post stated, “Nakahanda po ako anytime. Haharap ako, dadalo anumang oras. Pag-uusapan namin mga isyu ng distrito, mga isyu ipinupukol sa amin bilang kandidato”.
Florido stated that the invitation was extended to emphasize the importance of open discussion and informed decision-making among residents. "Debates are crucial for people to understand the candidates' platforms and make informed choices,"
To put an end to fake news and trolling, he should address issues in their area face to face so that trolls and paid commenters do not get in the way. He believes that face-to-face discussions are the best way to address concerns and clarify any misinformation.
"Tapatan po tayo. Walang trolls. Tayo lang dalwa. Lapagan ng dokumento, lapagan ng ebidensiya." He affirmed his commitment to attend, saying, "Anytime po, Congressman Reynan. Aattend ako… dahil ito ay ating responsibilidad.
Florido believes that a debate will provide a valuable platform for candidates to clearly articulate their positions on important matters, such as governance and public service.
However, Arrogancia has not yet responded to requests for comment on his participation in the debate. His silence has prompted questions about his willingness to engage in open dialogue and transparency with the public.
Meanwhile, Comelec Chairman Erwin Garcia urged candidates to participate in public debates, underscoring the public's desire to hear directly from aspirants about their platforms and ideas.
"Debates increase voters' awareness and rationality, which is crucial in a country often swayed by personality politics," Garcia told reporters.
The Comelec had urged Congress to establish legislation forcing candidates to attend debates, with sanctions for those who do not.
