TAGKAWAYAN, Quezon- Representatives of DOST Quezon and DOST-FPRDI visited Tagkawayan Mayor Carlo Eleazar on February 21 to discuss possible projects and programs that can help develop the bamboo industry in Tagkawayan.
The Local Government of Tagkawayan aims to strengthen the bamboo industry.
For this, through the Local Economic Development and Investment Promotions Unit, they sought assistance from the Department of Science and Technology - Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI).
Among their activities was touring possible areas that could be turned into nurseries for bamboo plants.
Having a well-equipped nursery is essential to ensure an adequate supply of quality bamboo.
Prior to this, trainings were also held on the production of various products and instruments using bamboo.
The aim of these trainings is to provide Tagkawayan residents with skills so that they can create products that can generate income.
Among the main offices that will collaborate in the projects are MENRO, MGSO, MPDC, Tourism Office, PESO and Tagkawayan Arts Guild as an NGO. Bamboo has a wide range of uses—from construction and furniture to musical instruments and other products.
The Municipal Government aims to strengthen this industry that can bring many benefits to Tagkawayan, including: Creating jobs and business opportunities, strengthening the local economy, promoting environmentally-friendly products introducing new skills to the citizens.
With the help of DOST-FPRDI, LGU Tagkawayan hopes to achieve their goal of becoming one of the leading producers of bamboo products in CALABARZON. (PIA QUEZON)
