LUCENA CITY, Quezon = Recognizing the pivotal role of livestock in bolstering rural economies, the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian initiated a comprehensive training program. Livestock is a cornerstone of the Philippine agricultural sector, providing essential income and food security, particularly in remote areas where alternative livelihood opportunities are limited.
A strategic alliance was formed as the Provincial Veterinarian's Office collaborated with the National Irrigation Administration - Quezon Irrigation Management Office (NIA-QMO) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). This inter-agency partnership facilitated the delivery of a well-structured cattle raising training session, leveraging the combined expertise and resources of each organization.
The targeted initiative directly addressed the specific needs of the Prosperity SLP Association, a community-based group dedicated to sustainable livelihood development. Providing hands-on training and practical knowledge, the program empowered association members with the skills necessary to enhance their cattle raising practices.
This collaborative effort sought to strengthen the economic resilience and food security of the beneficiaries. The partnership underscored the importance of integrated, multi-faceted approaches to community development, ensuring that participants receive holistic support for their agricultural endeavors.
The one-day training program, conducted under the Enhanced Partnership Against Hunger and Poverty (EPAHP) initiative, provided invaluable knowledge to twenty-seven (27) members of the association. The EPAHP program itself is a national government strategy aimed at mitigating hunger and poverty by enhancing the convergence of essential services to target beneficiaries.
Mr. Rommel I. Deapera expertly led the training, focusing on practical techniques to optimize cattle production. The session covered critical aspects such as optimal breed selection, tailored nutritional strategies, proactive disease prevention, and efficient pasture management.
Participants also gained insights into modern cattle handling and meticulous record-keeping, essential for maximizing productivity and profitability. Effective record-keeping in livestock management is proven to increase farm efficiency by up to 20%, according to studies by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD).
Beyond the theoretical instruction, the Provincial Veterinarian’s Office distributed vital resources, including high-quality seed crops and informative pamphlets. The distribution of seed crops aimed to encourage the cultivation of nutrient-rich forage, ensuring a sustainable and economical feed source.
The core objective of the training was to augment the beneficiaries' expertise in cattle raising, leading to enhanced production and increased income. This training directly supports the broader objectives of the EPAHP program, which seeks to combat poverty and hunger by fostering sustainable livelihood initiatives within vulnerable communities.
