LUCENA CITY, Quezon – In a move signaling a shift towards greener urban mobility, and reflecting a growing national trend towards sustainable transportation, the city of Lucena has witnessed the formal oath-taking of its inaugural Electric Bike Owners Association (EBOA), with Mayor Mark Don Victor Alcala presiding over the ceremony.
The newly formed organization, "Samahan ng EBOA," is spearheaded by Major Jose Asensi, Jr., Civil Military Affair Brigade Commander of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Reserve Command, based in Camp Nakar, Lucena City, who has been elected as its president.
The EBOA's primary objective is to actively combat climate change by promoting the use of electric bikes as a sustainable alternative to gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles. The association's advocacy centers on reducing carbon emissions that contribute to atmospheric pollution and exacerbate the impact of typhoons.
Major Asensi elaborated on the urgency of their mission, stating, "We aim to set an example by moving away from vehicles that rely on gasoline or diesel, which release harmful carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This is a critical step in mitigating the effects of climate change."
He further emphasized the direct impact on the Philippines, saying, "Here in the Philippines, we experience up to twenty strong typhoons that destroy rice, vegetable, and fruit crops, roads, bridges, and houses, while also contributing to health issues like osteoporosis and flooding. These extreme weather events are a direct consequence of the escalating climate crisis."
Asensi also addressed the broader implications of their initiative, "By embracing electric bikes, we are not only reducing our carbon footprint but also fostering a healthier and more sustainable community. We believe this initiative can inspire others to adopt eco-friendly practices."
He added regarding the membership, "We welcome all electric bike owners who share our vision of a cleaner and greener Lucena City. We want to build a strong community that is dedicated to environmental stewardship."
The EBOA has already attracted over 100 members, demonstrating the growing interest in eco-friendly transportation within Lucena City. Individuals interested in joining the organization can inquire about membership requirements by contacting CP No. 09694615261. (PIA)
