TAYABAS CITY, Quezon - The City Environment and Natural Resources Office - Ecological Solid Waste Management Unit (CENRO-ESWMU) celebrated the successful conclusion of its 1st Quarter "Palit Basura Caravan." The initiative effectively diverted 2,260 kilograms of plastic waste from the environment, trading it for 1,300 kilograms of rice and demonstrating the community's strong commitment to sustainable practices.

The final day of the caravan, held on Friday, March 28, 2025, witnessed enthusiastic participation from residents residing within Cluster 3 and Cluster 4 barangays. The designated collection points at the Barangay Dapdap Covered Court and the Barangay Lakawan Covered Court became hubs of activity, as 35 residents from Cluster 3 and 33 residents from Cluster 4 brought their accumulated plastic waste.

The "Palit Basura Caravan" operates on a straightforward exchange system, incentivizing waste collection: for every two kilograms of plastic waste submitted, residents receive one kilogram of rice. This simple yet effective approach not only encourages the community to actively participate in waste management but also addresses the issue of plastic pollution that plagues many urban areas.

This project stands as a testament to the Tayabas City Local Government's dedication to environmental preservation, a vision championed by Mayor Lovely Reynoso-Pontioso. Actively engaging residents in the process of waste reduction, the city aims to cultivate a culture of responsible waste management, ultimately leading to a cleaner and more sustainable environment for all.

Looking ahead, the city government plans to sustain and expand these initiatives in subsequent quarters, striving for even greater community involvement and a more profound impact on the city's overall cleanliness and environmental sustainability. This ongoing commitment underscores Tayabas City's determination to create a cleaner and healthier environment for its citizens.
