Tayabas City implements traffic rerouting for Holy Week pilgrimage
Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel (BasilicangTayabas)

TAYABAS CITY, Quezon – As Holy Week approaches, the local government unit (LGU) of Tayabas City has announced temporary traffic rerouting measures to facilitate the anticipated influx of pilgrims heading to the revered Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel. These changes will be implemented from 12:00 PM on Holy Thursday, April 17, 2025, until 3:00 AM on Good Friday, April 18, 2025.

The comprehensive traffic rerouting plan has been meticulously designed to facilitate the "Buen Camino" (Blessed Journey) of devotees as they participate in pilgrimages from various entry points leading to the Basilica. The LGU has outlined specific routes tailored for different types of vehicles and their respective points of origin to optimize traffic flow.

All buses, vans, jeepneys, and private vehicles transporting pilgrims arriving from the directions of Mauban Way, Lucena Way, and Lucban Way will be systematically directed onto the designated By-Pass Road, guiding them towards the Barangay Baguio By-Pass. Upon reaching this crucial intersection, these vehicles will be guided to enter the Poblacion area via Felimon Perez Street, smoothly proceeding along Munting Bayan Street.

Subsequently, these pilgrimage vehicles will make a left turn onto Apolinario Dela Cruz Street, continuing their ascent uphill towards M.H. Del Pilar Street, then carefully navigating onto Bonifacio Street, and finally proceeding along S. Reyes Street, ultimately leading them to their destination at the Basilica Church. For vehicles that will be departing the Poblacion area after their visit, the clearly marked designated route will be J.P. Rizal Street, followed by M. Ponce Street, and finally connecting to C.M. Recto Street (Lucena Way) for their onward journey.

Vehicles with the specific intention of reaching the Basilica Minore and originating from the areas of Barangay Lita and the Public Market will utilize Luis Palad Street, followed by a mandatory left turn onto P. Nadres Street. This maneuver will be followed by another left turn onto M. Ponce Street, culminating in a final right turn onto J.P. Rizal Street, ensuring their direct arrival at the intended place of worship.

For vehicles undertaking the journey towards Lucban and originating from the same points of Barangay Lita and the Public Market, the designated route will commence on Luis Palad Street, followed by a left turn onto Regidor Street. Subsequently, these vehicles will make a left turn onto Marcelo H. del Pilar Street, eventually leading to a right turn onto Quezon Avenue, guiding them towards their destination in Lucban.

Vehicles arriving from Barangay Lalo and neighboring barangays, with their destinations set for the Public Market and Lucena City proper, will travel along the main thoroughfare of Quezon Avenue, making a right turn onto Marcelo H. del Pilar Street. Following this turn, they will proceed with a left turn onto Legaspi Street and a final right turn onto General Luna Street, which will efficiently direct them towards the Public Market and the route leading to Lucena City.

The regular and established routes for tricycles within Tayabas City will remain unchanged and unaffected during this period of temporary traffic adjustments. Furthermore, local authorities have issued a strict advisory, emphasizing the absolute prohibition of any obstruction of intersections along the entire stretch of Quezon Avenue, ensuring the unimpeded and continuous flow of vehicular traffic.

Motorists and the general public are strongly advised to take meticulous note of these temporary traffic arrangements and to proactively plan their travel within Tayabas City accordingly to avoid any inconvenience. Law enforcement and dedicated traffic management personnel will be actively deployed at key points to guide motorists and ensure the effective and orderly implementation of these measures throughout the specified period.

The Tayabas City LGU is appealing to the public for their full understanding and cooperation to ensure a solemn and peaceful observance and a safe journey for all pilgrims visiting the revered Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel. This historically significant city, nestled in the heart of Quezon Province, Philippines, stands as a testament to the nation's rich cultural heritage, boasting well-preserved Spanish colonial-era architecture that attracts visitors and historians alike.

Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel, also widely recognized as the Tayabas Cathedral, serves as a prominent landmark and a vital religious sanctuary in the region, drawing numerous pilgrims, particularly during the sacred time of Holy Week. It is therefore essential for travelers to stay informed about the specific guidelines issued by the respective local government units to ensure a seamless and respectful participation in the Holy Week observances.
